About our speaker: Dr. Neil Schechter

Dr. Schechter is Associate Professor of Anesthesia (Pediatrics) at Harvard Medical School and Senior Associate in Pain Medicine at the Boston Children’s where he directs the Chronic Pain Clinic and is an attending physician in the Functional Abdominal Pain Clinic. Prior to 2010, he was Professor of Pediatrics and Head of the Division of Pain Medicine in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine and Director of the Pain Relief Program at the Connecticut Children’s Medical Center in Hartford, Connecticut. He is board certified in pediatrics and developmental and behavioral pediatrics.

 

EDUCATION:

Dr. Schechter received his undergraduate degree from Northwestern University, his medical degree from the University of Connecticut, completed pediatric training at the University of Connecticut, and did fellowships in Psychosomatic and Developmental Pediatrics at Boston Children’s Hospital.

PUBLICATIONS 
– Dr. Schechter has authored over 100 articles, both original research and reviews.
– He is the senior editor of “Pain in Infants, Children, and Adolescents”. This is the major multi-disciplinary textbook in the area of pediatric pain, and serves on numerous editorial boards in both pain medicine and developmental and behavioral pediatrics.

COMMITTEES AND ASSOCIATION
– World Health Organization Expert Committee on Pediatric Pain and Palliative Care
– The Task Force on Pain in Children of the American Pain Society
– The Ehlers Danlos Medical Advisory Board
– The Institute of Medicine Committee on the Care of Children Who Die
– The Rome Committee on Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders Pain which will release its latest revision of criteria later this year
– He is president of ChildKind, a global initiative to reduce pain in children’s healthcare institutions

AWARDS
– The Jeffrey Lawson Award of the American Pain Society in recognition of his efforts to improve the management of pain in children.
– The June Dahl Lectureship of the Alliance of State Pain Initiatives in recognition of his work on promoting institutional change regarding pain management.

RESEARCH AND AREAS OF INTEREST
– Dr. Schechter’s research has focused initially on documenting the under-treatment of pain in children and attempting to understand its origin.
– He has become involved in issues of pain associated with chronic disease and on the often painful medical procedures associated with it.
– Most recently, he has become interested in the more common pains associated with pediatric practice such as injection pain and functional pain syndromes with a particular interest in overlapping pain disorders.
– An additional focus of his work is in developing strategies to alter pain management-related practice patterns in health care providers and institutions.
